Cutters Soccer Club Golf Outing

I have just recently retired from coaching women's college soccer at IU and the University of Evansville for the last 25 years and am now in a position where I want to work and give back to the local soccer community of Bloomington; the Cutters Soccer Club. Soccer coaching and playing has been and still is a huge part of my life but I realize it didn't just happen over night. Everything has a beginning and Cutters Soccer Club is where the start of a magical experience can begin for these youngsters. Please help me raise money so that these kids can get the greatest opportunity possible from this wonderful game of soccer. Cheers.

Dave Fletcher on TV

Folk singer, Dave Fletcher was on "Ade in Britain" on 11 April 2013 with Ade Edmondson. The programme was on ITV and this was episode 29 in the second series and looked at crafts and foods of Lincolnshire.

Dave with his partner in song, Bill (Bill Whaley and Dave Fletcher) can be found from 36 minutes 45 seconds to the end of the programme for eleven more days.

OBA Annual Dinner 2013 - Report

After the sudden death of Paul Mould only two months before the annual dinner, which he had organised for each of the last few years, the OBA President, Peter Sharman, gamely took over the reins, and suggested it should be a tribute to Paul. Understandably, with the late change of responsibility, numbers were down this year (45) but the atmosphere on 20 April was as good as ever and Nick Fitton was certainly among the best speakers we've had when I've been present.

Bill Hilton married Christina Les on 4 April 2013 at Bangor, in Top College which is the main building of Bangor University.

Christina, originally from Darlington, is a linguist and is currently studying for an MA in Translation Studies at Bangor.

When at BGS, Bill played in the Jazz Band. He now has his own business doing copywriting and training. He has written books, including How To Really Play The Piano (The Stuff Your Teacher Never Taught You) which is supported by a very popular series of videos on YouTube.

Stuart Lowther - Obituary

Stuart Lowther (BGS 1941-47)

Stuart Lowther, of Low Road, Wyberton, Boston, died at home on 17 March 2013 following an illness. He was 82.

Stuart was born in 1930 to Richard and Mabel, the sixth child of an eventual eight: Roy, Beryl, Heather, Derek, Isabel, Stuart, Judy and Bartie. He attended St Thomas' Primary School before going on to Boston Grammar School.

At Grammar School, maths and physics were always favourite subjects and led to a lifetime interest and daily use of maths in his work. Sport on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings were to be avoided at all costs as his preference was for spending time at Frampton Marsh.

Godfrey Finn - Obituary

J Godfrey M K Finn (BGS 1941-46)

Godfrey "Goff" Finn died in his sleep last night (26-27/April 2013) at the age of 82. He was known to his friend as Goff and his schooldays nickname was Alphabet Finn, due to his having four initials.

Goff served the OBA well as Membership Secretary and in that role he was a great help to me during the first few years I edited The Old Bostonian Magazine.

BGS Junior GK Team through to national semis

The Boston Grammar School Junior General Knowledge A Team has made it to the national semi-finals of the National Junior Quiz Challenge after beating St Ivo School from St Ives in Cambs in the East Midlands final. The team were Oliver Cammack, Oliver Jones, Neelay Sant and Ross Hawkins.

Extraordinary General Meeting - A brief report

It's been a busy weekend for me and I have lots of things to post here and elsewhere about it. A report of the OBA Annual Dinner will follow as soon as I can complete it but first this. Friday evening (19 April 2013) was an Extraordinary General Meeting of the Old Bostonian Association.

There would usually have been a committee meeting the day before the Annual Dinner but it was converted to an EGM this year mainly because of the recent untimely death of Paul Mould. At the time of his death Paul was holding the posts of Secretary and Membership Secretary. He had also edited the last issue of the association's magazine "The Old Bostonian" and he played an important part in the organisation of many of the association's social events: annual dinner, snooker tournament and quiz night among them.

The main business of the meeting was to elect a new Secretary and Membership Secretary.

On 18 April 2013 Stan Meeds received a Service to the Community Award from Boston Borough Council. The citation is as follows:

In appreciation of his dedicated commitments and invaluable service to the community, particularly to St Nicholas Church, Skirbeck, serving as churchwarden for over thirty years, to the British Red Cross, and the local branches of the Royal British Legion and The Royal Naval Association.

...this award for services to the community as an expression of the high esteem in which he is held in the Borough.

Dick Massingham - Obituary

Richard "Dick" Massingham

Dick passed away peacefully at Pilgrim Hospital on 4 April 2013, aged 85 years.

While Dick was not a Member of the Old Bostonian Association he played both cricket and football for the Old Boys teams.  For many years he was Registrar for Births Marriages and Deaths in Boston and was also a well respected local football referee.

Flash Mob - Mama Do The Hump

Boston police community support officer, PCSO Jaki Smith, has been engaged in a youth project with young boys and girls from Boston Grammar School, Boston Police Cadets, Boston Army Cadets, Boston Air Training Corps, Boston Sea Cadets and Boston Fire Cadets, which culminated in a ‘flash mob’ event in Pescod Square on Saturday 23 March.

John Lewis Dickson - Obituary

John Lewis Dickson (BGS 1932-42)

John Lewis Dickson died on 17 January 2012 at Dorset County Hospital, aged 87 years.

While at BGS, John won the Parry Gold Medal (1942), of which he was very proud. Because of wartime restrictions, the medal was made of bronze rather than of gold. He went on to become a nuclear science engineer on the staff of the Atomic Energy Authority at Winfrith in 1946 and lived in Dorchester.

At the time of his death, John had been married to his wife, Eileen, for 63 years.
